EST ! EST !! EST !!! di Montefiascone DOC Secco

In 1100 Bavarian bishop Johann Defuk, accompanying Emperor Henry V (who had come to Italy to resolve a dispute with Pope Pasquale II), sent his cupbearer Martino ahead with the task of identifying the inns serving the best wines with the Latin word Est (“There is”). At Montefiascone, near Lake Bolsena, Martino wrote Est three times, to emphasise the quality of the local wine. The bishop liked this wine so much that he returned to Montefiascone at the end of the mission, and stayed there until he died. Johann Defuk is buried in the temple of San Flaviano, at Montefiascone. For a long time it was customary to pour a barrel of wine over his tomb.
